Bauhaus Museum Dessau / competition entry

"Nur vollkommene Harmonie in der technischen Zweck-Funktion sowohl wie in den Proportionen der Formen kann Schönheit hervorbringen. Und das macht unsere Aufgabe so vielseitig und kompliziert."

Walter Gropius

The lesson of the Bauhaus is that architecture can - and must - be done with the simplest elements. This is the guiding concept of our proposal. Our goal is that the building of the museum communicates the same, timeless values and principles.

Purity in geometry: the cycle. This primary shape that symbolizes the whole is recognizable from a great distance. Within the large circle a free composition of smaller circles, arcs, lines and curves is perfectly clear. The place as an experience of pure geometry.

Clarity in the program: spaces which are delimited with precision. Spaces which flow seamlessly into each other. The museum is organized into two sections. The first section is located on the ground floor, in direct relation to the city. Here all public functions are taking place. The second section is on the 1st floor. Here are located the galleries of the museum (7 'topoi').

Transparency in the functioning: a path coming from the city (Antoinetten-Strasse) passes through the park. Turning eastwards and driven to the building's entrance. This path intersects the circle in two areas: north and south. The path continues and ends in a ramp. The ramp climbs up. We are in the exhibition area. The ramp continues. We arrive on the terrace of the museum. We are in a public circular square.

A history of forms: Gropius' 'Arbeitsamt Dessau', Fieger's 'Kornhaus Dessau', Wright's 'Guggenheim', Van Eyck's 'Sonsbeek'. The lesson of Bauhaus: do the most with the least. A few simple shapes, but many different spaces, structures and typologies. A rich spatial experience - a compact architectural index of the 20th and 21st century.

The simplicity of materials: constructed with the basic materials of modern architecture. Reinforced concrete, white plastered surfaces, large transparent glazing, metal frames, railings and details. An actual and symbolic economy.
