Animals in Modern Greek Architecture

Stanley J. Seeger Visiting Fellow - Princeton University (Fall 2019)

Research Project:
Animals in Modern Greek Architecture
My research aims at launching a discourse on the functions and meanings of animals in modern and contemporary architecture. Through a historical documentation and theorization I will highlight the animal as a vital symbol/signifier/qualifier for the human, as an object which expands, completes or even mirrors the notion of the human. The focal area of my research will be the work of a few selected Greek architects of the 20th century, from their theoretical texts to their drawings, projects and buildings. Animals will be re-conceptualized and re-contextualized, reviving as models, paradigms, and metaphors that attempt to critically question the identities, definitions and boundaries of modern Greek architecture and its various disjunctions.
