Le double voyage : Paris‐Athènes (1945‐1975)
Kostas Tsiambaos,
abstract EN
In 1945 Aristomenis Provelenghios was travelling from Athens to Paris on the ship "Mataroa". After about ten years, and after having worked to Le Corbusier's office, he decided to return to Athens. The residence-atelier Spiteri on the corner of Cycladon and Kefallinias streets in Kypseli, designed by Provelenghios in 1955, is considered as one of the masterpieces of post-war modern Greek architecture. Many of the architectural design elements learned next to Le Corbusier are found in this residence. But, if for Le Corbusier architecture had to replace the revolution, for Provelenghios architecture had to prepare the revolution. Architecture or Revolution? Provelenghios would ask "why not both?" Even if this is a 'misunderstanding', this misunderstanding may be of interest to us.

'On the Duty and Power of Architectural Criticism' - online conference
"On the Duty and Power of Architectural Criticism" is an online conference organized by Professor Wilfried Wang taking place October 9-10 and October 16-17, 2021.
Should architectural criticism be enlightening? Should it help in the creation of a better built environment? Is there a factual basis to it? Does it have a duty to present evidence in the evaluation of a building? Or should it take on what architects say about their designs?
In the context of a flat internet, should architectural criticism be able to define best practices? Does it wield the power over who is in and who is out?
Architectural criticism, like all human endeavors, is at a crucial juncture. While serious architecture struggles for recognition, much so-called architectural criticism is merely a poorly paid, decorative legitimation for hyperbolic practice. Incisive architectural criticism is rare, while the definition of criticism itself has become opaque.
This conference seeks papers that define the purposes and methods of architectural criticism. What should the ethical basis be of architectural criticism? Can it be objective in the context of paid content? Should it outline ideal practices? Or what should it do?

DOCOMOMO Japan
Docomomo Japan together with Docomomo International are excited that we are able to invite you all to the 16th, but the very first, Docomomo International VIRTUAL Conference from August 29, to September 2, 2021.
Since 1990, every 2 years, docomomo has been constantly holding the international conferences. Last year in 2020, for the first time in our docomomo history, we had to postpone the conference scheduled in Tokyo and hoped to see the worldwide pandemic is to be contained. With the time we actually gained, we were able to enhance and expand the contents of the conference theme and we can now have a much more exciting conference this year in 2021. Session themes are increased from 12 to 16. One change we had to make, however, is to hold this conference completely virtually.
After a year of numerous remote working and online meetings, we all become somewhat familiar with digital system that we knew nothing about before. Even so, it is quite challenging for our organizing committee to shift the conference completely virtually. Thanks to many encouragements and tireless supports given from docomomo international staff, the scientific committee and many fellow members from worldwide, we came to the conclusion that an old dog can learn a new trick! Now we are very pleased to tell you that almost all the contents we planned for the real conference can be shifted to virtual.
